He said digital thermostats will display emergency heat, EmHeat, or auxiliary heat when heat strips are activated. Older thermostats might have a red light that goes on.

JEA customers have faced higher costs for electricity since late 2021 when natural gas prices began driving up the fuel charge portion of bills, a cost that utilities across the state have faced. The typical monthly bill before taxes and fees for a JEA residential customer using 1,000-kilowatt hours of electricity was $123.35 in October 2021. The fuel charge part of that bill was $30.50.

The fuel charge portion since then has gone as high as $83.46 in September. It has fallen since then and is $49.78 this month and will go up to $59.73 in January. JEA projects the fuel charge will be $44.57 in April when a proposed change in the base rate portion of residential bills could take effect.

JEA executives have said the utility has been using long-term hedging contracts that lock in natural gas prices to try to manage the global volatility in natural gas prices.Opening a faucet relieves the pressure that builds when freezing occurs to prevent pipes from bursting.
