Foster children who are in DPS custody face homelessness at 18, often due to a lack of support. With one decision, Judge Mary Lou Alvarez , who is known for standing up for the children known as CWOP kids, or children without placement, gave a 17-year-old a chance to share his story.
And when they run away, they are simply not accounted for by the department, as we recently found out during a federal court hearing. “I have not had any grieving counseling at all,” said Matt. “I definitely thank God for being by my side and standing by me. And I thank Mia for helping me and continuing my fight. And I'm doing it for her because without her, you know, I don't know where I would be I don't think I'll be sharing as much with the public, as I would like."
