A 9-year-old filed a lawsuit against North Carolina because the state made medical gender transition interventions illegal for children.

Earlier this year, the Tar Heel State legislature overrode a veto from Gov. Roy Cooper to enact medical protections for children, making it illegal for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or surgeries to children until they are 18 years of age. The lawsuit says that the provision was passed despite"sustained and robust opposition of medical experts" and that the protections"interfere with the ability of doctors to follow these evidence-based protocols." Plaintiffs claim the law violates the equal protection clause and"discriminates against transgender minors on the basis of sex and transgender status."
