Mayor Brandon Johnson sidestepped the question of whether a property tax hike is on the table
Live streaming newscasts, breaking news, weather & original, local programming.The city of Chicago is facing a massive budget shortfall that is approaching nearly a billion dollars for 2025.
"This is just a forecast," Mayor Johnson said. "It's a moment in time, and so no decision will be made just based upon a forecasting. But what I will say is that I'm very much committed to our overall vision of investing in people." The mayor said he will work with stakeholders, including labor and the business community to come up with solutions.
But the city is looking at reinstating some fees and rates that were put on hold during the pandemic. But they are not relying on the remaining Covid funds the city received or factoring in adding a city tax on grocery after the state tax goes away.
