The Windy City is in for a frigid weekend as dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills plunge the city into an intense cold spell.
Chicagoans are bracing for a major shift in weather this weekend as dangerously cold conditions are expected to grip the city. Beginning Saturday night, temperatures will plummet from the high teens to the mid-20s, dropping into the single digits. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts wind speeds of 10 to 20 miles per hour, combined with the frigid temperatures, will create wind chills ranging from -8 to -18 degrees.
The most intense cold is anticipated on Sunday and Monday nights, with wind chills plummeting to -15 to -25 degrees, and even reaching a chilling -30 degrees in isolated areas. These extreme conditions are typical of Chicago's winter climate, with the city usually experiencing at least one cold spell of this magnitude each year. Last January serves as a stark reminder, when wind chill values dropped as low as -32 degrees. The NWS urges extreme caution for anyone venturing outside during this frigid spell. Frostbite can set in within 30 minutes or less under such extreme wind chills. Additionally, the NWS warns that the bitter cold could lead to rapid ice formation on local rivers, potentially causing ice jams. These jams, the NWS warns, could result in rapid rises on area rivers with little to no warning, and isolated areas could face flooding.
