Clear skies and light winds have caused temperatures to plummet in Chicago, with areas experiencing snow seeing even colder readings. The forecast predicts sunny to partly cloudy conditions today with highs in the mid to upper 20s. Light snow is expected to move in overnight, impacting the morning commute with accumulations ranging from a half-inch to 2 inches. Temperatures will moderate slightly over the weekend, but another arctic air mass is set to arrive early next week, bringing highs struggling to reach 20 degrees.

Clear skies and light winds have allowed Chicago temperatures to go into the tank once again, especially in areas where there’s a little bit of snow on the ground. As of 3:30 a.m., the coldest temperatures are Waukegan, where it is 3 degrees, and Kankakee, where it is 4 degrees. Today will be sunny to partly cloudy with high temperatures in the mid to perhaps upper 20s. Tonight we’ll see increasing cloud cover, and light snow moving in from the south and west sometime before dawn.

I expect anywhere from a half-inch far north to perhaps 2 inches or so far south of Chicago. Snow will be over by the afternoon commute with high temperatures having topped out close to 30 degrees. On Saturday we will have a mostly to partly sunny day with high temperatures, flirting with 30 degrees once again. Sunday presents another opportunity for light snow with perhaps 1 inch of accumulation and high temperatures again not far from 30.
