NEW DETAILS: Chesterland Township Police ask church to cancel 'Drag Queen Story Time'; church says it plans to still hold event

CHESTERLAND, Ohio — The Chesterland Township Police Department is asking the Community Church of Chesterland to cancel its"Drag Queen Story Time," which is scheduled for this weekend, in order to"protect all involved, the children attending, and the residents of Chester Township." Police say they are concerned about"potential violence."

Police say the recommendation is based on intelligence it has gathered, as well as information provided by the event's organizer. The church released a statement Thursday morning stating it would not cancel the event as it is"confident" in its security plan. "We are expecting some protest activity outside the events Saturday. Despite three vile threats from hate groups, we are moving forward and we are confident in our security plan," the church said."We desperately wish to communicate to well-meaning supporters and community members that they should stay home if they are not coming to our events with a ticket," the church said.
