CBS was just minutes into its Selection Show on Sunday afternoon, and analyst Clark Kellogg was already picking an upset.
It’s not just Kellogg and Davis. Charleston is quickly becoming a fashionable upset pick on brackets everywhere but in the southwest corner of the country, despite the Aztecs opening as a 5.5-point favorite with oddsmakers. Compare that to No. 13s, which win at only a 20.9 percent clip. No. 10 and 11 seeds win more than 12s do, but not appreciably more. Both are under 40 percent.
“That’s why no one has ever come through with a perfect bracket. At some level, you’re guessing. I’ve never been bold enough to even think about filling one out.”That means it is the best of the 5 seeds and one spot from being a 4. And with a 4 seed comes geographic protection, meaning the Aztecs would have been headed to Sacramento for the opening weekend.
“When I came down, my finger jammed into the floor,” Butler said. “It’s badly sprained, but I’m going to push through it. I was trying to keep my mind off it during the game. I couldn’t really shoot much, but I was trying to get into the paint and make plays.
