Charles Ives’s exuberant orchestral piece 'The Fourth of July,' scored in 1912, captures in six minutes the clamor and nostalgia of a New Englander’s Independence Day and the proud force of the American spirit
orchestral work “The Fourth of July” was, as film composer, intended as more than a mere poetic impression of an occasion. Scored in the summer of 1912, this third movement of the composer’s “A Symphony: New England Holidays” is, in Hermann’s words, “A photographic replica in sounds of a happening”—that is, a veritable tapestry of specific musical cues.
The overall effect belongs less to the linear storytelling tradition of Berlioz or Liszt than to the radical literary experiments forged by writers like, where events and sensory memories collide in vivid stream-of-consciousness juxtapositions.
