COSTA MESA — Training camp came to a merciful end for the Chargers on Wednesday. They still have an exhibition game to play against the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night in Santa Clara, but the grind is behind them. When they reconvene on Tuesday, cuts will have trimmed the roster to 53 players.
“He showed great stamina throughout camp, being able to be healthy throughout camp and work through all the things you have to work through as a rookie. He’s got real toughness. He practices really hard. He’s studying. He’s learning how to study and prepare.Johnston caught three of the six passes quarterback Easton Stick tossed in his direction, including an 8-yard touchdown, during the Chargers’ 34-17 victory over the Rams on Aug. 12.
Tuipulotu, a second-round pick from USC, could have an easier route to the field than Johnston since the Chargers are not as deep at his position. Tuipulotu figures to be a backup to Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, two veterans who have been selected to play in multiple Pro Bowls in their careers.
