Padres CEO Erik Greupner says team may need to consider making FanFest a two-day event or staggering entry times in order to accommodate all the fans
The crowd began building a couple of hours before an event scheduled for 9 a.m. , with traffic backed up for blocks to get downtown, long lines to get inside the ballpark and longer lines to get autographs from players.
“We tried to be clear with people that the autographs and photo ops were not guaranteed. ... We thought it would be really, really full today, and it was. But I think the experience overall was good.” “I got a ticket early on and thought it would be a fun place to take my kids. In the end, it was just a waste of time. ... We walked on the field, took some video and then tried to figure out who was where. There’s no signs. The people don’t know until you get up to the front who is signing.”
The event was supposed to last until 4 p.m., but the Padres extended that one hour to accommodate those who may have been delayed entering the ballpark.“It’s been a huge success,” Greupner said. “In future years, now that we’ve seen and experienced what this year was like, as always we’ll make some changes and try to improve the experience for fans. With such unprecedented interest in FanFest, Greupner said the Padres could consider making it a two-day event going forward.
