Celine Dion’s Olympics performance marks her first return to performing after years.
Celine Dion performed at the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony Friday in her first live performance since her stiff person syndrome diagnosis.The French-Canadian singer closed the ceremony immediately after the lighting of the Olympic cauldron with a performance from the first stage of the Eiffel Tower. She sang Edith Piaf’s "L’Hymne à l’amour."Dressed in a beaded, glittering dress, Dion concluded her performance on a heartfelt note, showing emotion as it came to an end.
She then revealed that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome , which she explained had been causing severe muscle spasms. SPS is a rare, progressive syndrome that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord, according to the National Institutes of Health. In the U.S., the disease is estimated to affect fewer than 5,000 people, according to the NIH.
