February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the countless achievements and contributions of the Black community in the United States. Established in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, this annual observance honors the rich history, culture, and resilience of African Americans. This year's theme, 'African Americans and Labor,' delves into the crucial role Black Americans have played in shaping the nation's workforce and labor movements.
The African American Museum in Dallas is hosting a special event, the African American Read-In, on February 15th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Partnering with The Dock Bookshop, the museum presents a day filled with literary exploration and engagement. The event promises a diverse range of activities for all ages, including author meet-and-greets, lively book discussions, captivating poetry readings, a marketplace of vendor booths, and even a unique speed-dating session. Featured books include works by acclaimed author Ellen Levine. Admission to the African American Read-In is free.Beyond the Read-In, Dallas-Fort Worth offers numerous opportunities to commemorate Black History Month. The city will also host the Black History Month Celebration and Art Exhibit and the Dallas Black History Month Food Festival. The Black History Month Celebration and Art Exhibit showcases the talents and creativity of local Black artists, while the Dallas Black History Month Food Festival provides a delectable journey through the diverse flavors of Black culinary traditions. This community-driven journalism initiative receives generous support from a variety of sources, including the Better Together Fund, Carol & Don Glendenning, City of Dallas OAC, The University of Texas at Dallas, Communities Foundation of Texas, The Dallas Foundation, Eugene McDermott Foundation, James & Gayle Halperin Foundation, Jennifer & Peter Altabef, and The Meadows Foundation. Recently, Alyson Rodriguez, a graduate of The University of Texas at El Paso, has joined the team as the new Events Producer. Rodriguez brings valuable reporting experience from her previous work with publications such as The Prospector, El Paso Matters, NPR Next Generation Radio, Texas Standard, Borderzine, and the arts access desk at The Dallas Morning News.
