CDC warns of flesh-eating bacteria following 8 deaths

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a national health alert warning health care providers about a flesh-eating bacteria

The bacteria, known as, has been the cause of fatal infections that have started out as foodborne illnesses or wounds.

The agency issued the alert after receiving reports of an uptick in Vibrio infections, including eight deaths, with five of those deaths in the state of Florida. Now, the agency is urging “healthcare professionals to consider V. vulnificus as a possible cause of infected wounds that were exposed to coastal waters, particularly near the Gulf of Mexico or East Coast, and during periods with warmer coastal sea surface temperatures.”

In a typical year, 80,000 people are infected with Vibrio and 100 die from a form of the bacterial infection,Vibrio infections, also known as vibriosis, are caused by bacteria that naturally inhabit warm salt or brackish waters. You can be infected if you consume raw or undercooked contaminated seafood, such as oysters.

You can also be infected in rare cases if you go into warm, salty or brackish waters with an open wound from a recent surgery, a piercing, a tattoo, or an open cut, scrape or sore.
