Car thefts in U.S. top 1 million for first time since 2008
Fox News contributor Jason Riley argued the crime crisis is a result of Democrat policy, telling 'Varney & Co.' there is evidence 'soft on crime laws' will be a big issue in the 2024 election.
In its analysis using data from the National Crime Information Center, the NICB found vehicle theft rose 7% last year to 1,001,967, the highest level since 2008 when 1.05 million were reported stolen. California led the nation in car thefts last year, with 202,658, followed by Texas, where criminals swiped a little over 100,000. However, the state that experienced the highest spike from 2021 was Illinois, which saw a 35% increase, followed by Washington and New York , according to the study.
