A couple's house is 'a natural gathering place' for relatives in San Antonio and...
The couple hopes to install a pair of vintage flat-bottom swings to a horizontal beam attached to the pavilion. They already have one and are on the hunt for a second. To make entertaining — and cooking — easier, about six months ago, the couple called Varsity back and asked them to build an outdoor covered kitchen in the backyard of the home, which is located east of Canyon Lake.
“We looked at a lot of Pinterest posts, searching for ‘Outdoor Kitchen Layouts’ to get an idea of what we wanted,” Diane said. Located adjacent to the existing pool, the just completed, 22-by-18-foot poolside pavilion took about 2½ months to build. That included several weeks of down time as supply-chain issues meant they had to wait to take delivery on some of the lumber, according to Randy Ortiz, a superintendent at Varsity. These including the solid cedar posts and crossbeams that give the pavilion its rustic, vaguely ski chalet charm.
To that end, the roof is supported by four 8-inch by 8-inch cedar posts than stand atop footings made with the same Oklahoma flagstone used elsewhere. And the 14-foot, peaked standing seam metal roof echoes that atop the nearby house. The final layout they decided upon includes an L-shaped concrete countertop measuring just over 17 linear feet and appliances that include a sink and refrigerator and enough room for Bill’s griddle and grill.
Industrial-style pendant lights above the countertop and a large overhead ceiling fan will help make the kitchen usable at night and during the summer.Four industrial-style pendant lights above the countertop and a large overhead ceiling fan help make the kitchen usable at night and during the summer.
