The Republican faces steep odds in a blue state, political observers say.
Should he run for governor in 2026, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco would face “a very, very steep uphill climb,” a politics professor said. There’s a scenario in which Chad Bianco becomes California’s next governor, but it involves a seismograph, joked a veteran GOP political consultant.
A “Draft Bianco” coalition has emerged to spur a Bianco run. It’s unclear whether the coalition is directly connected to Bianco. Forty-seven percent of California voters are registered Democrats, compared to 24% in the state who are Republicans. That means any GOP candidate needs independent and Democratic crossover votes to win. With their large populations, the deep blue cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco hold considerable sway in statewide elections — hence Madrid’s comment.is largely unpopular in California.
