LIV Golf spent the better part of the last year arguing in federal court that the PGA Tour was a walking antitrust violation. Now, the two rivals are interlocking arms. KaplanSportsBiz & BFQuinn on if the deal will survive antitrust concerns.
Also, if the PGA Tour drops its prohibition of its players competing on other tours, that would at least solve the central issues in the soon-to-be-dropped lawsuit. With a colossus LIV-PGA straddling the globe, the tour is unlikely to worry anymore about competing products.
“No one was concerned in 2019 whether there were options for other players, so we’re in exactly the same place,” the source said. “The difference being, players have so many more opportunities to make so much more money. So it’s hard to see where the antitrust problem is. If no one thought there was one before, it’s now the same thing, except better.”
What’s unclear is how the DOJ might respond if any player wants to opt out of the new venture entirely. If a member of the tour wants to cite personal qualms with the tour directly taking money from the Saudi controlled-PIF, and wants to seek another place to play, there’s essentially now no other elite professional golf tour to be apart of.
