A new military base is opening right along the Rio Grande, meant to give soldiers easier access to the frontlines of border issues.
EAGLE PASS , Texas - It's called the Camp Eagle Forward Operating Base, announced in February, and now welcoming its first soldiers. He also greeted the first 300 soldiers who will be stationed here. Most National Guardsmen or Texas Military Department members were traveling from other cities, staying at hotels miles away, and traveling in each day to complete their border assignments.
After that, officials say there are about six phases total, which will lead to nearly 1,800 troops living and working here. The base can hold up to about 2,000 troops if there are migrant surges. Most Eagle Pass residents we've talked to agree that border security is a huge issue, especially since they are on the frontlines. But they're split on how to handle it."In conjunction with landowners whowant to stop illegal immigration on their property, we're putting up anticlimb barrier and concertina wire," he said.
"This is a big project for a city the size of Eagle Pass," Suelzer said. "This will be a great economic engine for this community as these soldiers move in, and eat in the restaurants, go to the churches, buy gas in the gas stations... So we hope to have a great partnership with this community.""The reality is, this is the base is going to be needed as long as people are crossing the border illegally into the state of Texas," Abbott said.
