The Australian shot 8-under 64 to overturn a four-shot deficit in the final round of the Open Championship on Sunday. It was Smith’s first major title and the lowest score at a British Open at St. Andrews.

McIlroy started the final round tied for the lead. He hit every green in regulation but two-putted every hole on the final day at the Old Course. On the 18th, McIlroy needed to chip in for eagle to force a playoff but his shot went past the hole.American Cameron Young, meanwhile, made eagle at the last hole to jump to 19 under and alone in second place after a 7-under 65.

On Friday, the Utah golfer was relieved to make a birdie putt there and advance to the weekend rounds of the 150th Open Championship. He was disappointed the next day after missing an eagle attempt on that green, but Sunday’s finish was satisfying. Finau’s tap-in putt for his eighth birdie of the day completed a 6-under-par 66 that gave him a nice ending of the 2022 major tournament schedule.

Finau eagled the par-4 No. 9 from off the green in Saturday’s third round and almost added a finishing eagle on No. 18, but he missed a 15-foot putt in posting a 70. He started the final round in a tie for 55th and made two bogeys Sunday, caused by driving into a fairway bunker on No. 2 and hitting the famous Road Bunker with his approach shot on No. 17.

Finau made a 10-footer on the par-4 No. 16, a hole he had bogeyed the two previous days. He bogeyed the difficult No. 17 for a third straight day, but then birdied No. 18 for the third day in a row, nearly driving the green again.
