Reader looking for clues about two of his metal-detector finds: A marker with an unusual...

San Antonio was an important hub for Army units that participated in the Spanish American War. The 6th U.S. Infantry marches in a downtown homecoming parade in 1899. The returning regiment had been in the thick of the fighting at San Juan Hill, Cuba.I was rummaging through my finds of yesteryear and came across this marker. It has been quite a few years ago, and I can’t remember where I found it.

Also, I dug up an old military pin at my buddy’s ranch near Hebbronville. I’ve looked at quite a few of these but have not found this particular one. I’m sure the K and the 2 indicate the company or battalion. While metal-detecting this ranch, I found several coins from the early 1900s and late 1800s.

It’s engraved with the following: “JOHN/SUCHORZKY/JUNE. 10. D./1909. YEAR.” Some of the letters are uneven, suggesting it was inscribed by hand, one letter or number at a time, and the “D” and “YEAR” are larger than the other characters. “This could represent that the disc was premade with the numbers added later,” said McKenzie, suggesting a template to be filled in as needed. You are right that this surname, at least with a “Z,” is rare-to-unknown.

In 1921, veteran Suchorsky booked passage to Manila, Philippines, where he had served during the Spanish American War and again in 1909, “so perhaps the date on the plate reflects something that happened there,” Mabie said. There’s no evidence that Suchorsky ever married or had children, and he died June 25, 1926, in the Philippines.
