The California State Senate has approved Assembly Bill 1840, which would allow unauthorized immigrants to apply to the state's first-time homebuying loan program. Now the bill heads to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk for final approval.The program, 'California Dream for All,' offers up to 20% in down payment support, the bill would expand the program to unauthorized immigrants if enacted.

Lawmakers passed the measure, Assembly Bill 1840, in a 23-11 vote Tuesday. If the bill makes it through a final vote in the state's Assembly, it would expand eligibility requirements for the California Dream for All Shared Appreciation program, which provides residents up to 20 percent in down payment help when purchasing a home for the first time.

Under AB 1840, illegal immigrants with social security or taxpayer-identification numbers would qualify for a program called California Dream for All that gives first-time home buyers up to $150,000, with recipients only having to pay interest if they sell the property, Politico reported. Newsom has declined to comment...Gov. Gavin Newsom will soon determine if undocumented immigrants in California can qualify for a popular state-backed home loan program.
