A judge delivered his decision Friday in the case of David Innes, a Calgary man convicted of drug trafficking in Regina.

pleaded guilty to possessing both fentanyl and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, as well as two charges related to possessing the prohibited handgun.

Smith had argued a message needed to be sent about the “toxic and deadly” combination of drugs and guns. Innes, who carries a lengthy criminal history, was still on probation following his last trafficking conviction, and was subject to a firearms prohibition, when he was arrested in Regina, the prosecutor had told the judge.Article content

Chow noted Friday that Innes, whose record includes more than 70 previous convictions, has been assessed as a high risk to reoffend. Despite this, the judge found the trafficking to have been primarily for financial gain, as opposed to a means by which to support an addiction.
