Tim Pletten, the general manager at Coffee Cup Fuel Stop, told FOX Weather conditions started rapidly deteriorating on Dec. 12.Extremely strong wind gusts created drifting snow shutting down major highways on Dec. 14, including parts of Interstate 90 and Interstate 29. As road closures began, South Dakota Department of Transportation officials warned truck drivers to seek long-term parking options.Semi trucks were buried during a blizzard in South Dakota forcing their drivers to stay at a fuel stop for days.
"When they closed the interstate, they just continued to come in and fill up the parking lot," Pletten said. On Dec. 15, a maximum 63 mph wind gust was recorded at Pierre Municipal Airport, north of the fuel stop, according to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, South Dakota.Snowfall totals surpassed 20 inches by Dec. 17, with Victor receiving 23 inches.
