FIFA should bring in experienced male officials to help female referees adjust to the VAR system following a number of incidents at the FIFAWWC, former England striker Sue Smith tells Reuters

LONDON - Global soccer body FIFA should bring in experienced male officials to help female referees adjust to the Video Assistant Referee system following a number of incidents at the women’s World Cup, former England striker Sue Smith told Reuters.

Referees in the men’s game were able to get to grips with VAR at the 2017 Confederations Cup before last year’s World Cup in Russia and as well from some domestic leagues across Europe. “I think if we don’t have enough good female officials, at the level that they need to be at, then you have to bring in men ... who have refereed at the highest level are used to VAR... understand how it all works and just mix them together...

Other former Lionesses such as Faye White and Casey Stoney also called for male referees after criticism of Qin Liang’s officiating in England’s 3-0 quarter-final win over Cameroon. The new handball rule introduced by the International Football Association Board on June 1 has also caused controversy. Part of the rule states that a free kick or penalty will be awarded if “the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their silhouette unnaturally bigger.

“It’s ridiculous... the handball rule – the penalty against Japan. I felt so sorry for her and in the letter of the law it is a penalty, it did hit her arm, her arm is away from her body,” said the 39-year-old Smith, who scored 16 goals in 93 appearances for the Lionesses.
