'Less than a week after Daniels announced he would retire as Purdue University president at the end of this year, Republicans are fantasy booking their man Mitch into his next office.'
Republicans offer a few reasons Daniels might run: He could make history as a third-term governor , he could focus on new challenges that he didn’t have time for during his first two terms and, perhaps most importantly, Daniels’ wife, Cheri, seemed to enjoy serving as first lady more than she liked the idea of a presidential campaign.
Rumored names in the 2024 gubernatorial field include Sen. Mike Braun, businessman Eric Doden, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Rep. Trey Hollingsworth, Indiana GOP Chairman Kyle Hupfer and Attorney General Todd Rokita. Daniels could clear the field — and, if anyone stuck around, then he would at least be the assumed frontrunner over anyone in that group.
