Boy, 14, fatally wounded, 4 others shot, as police exchange shots with gunman on South Side

A 14-year-old boy was fatally wounded and four others were shot Thursday night in the Fuller Park neighborhood where officers opened fire when a gunman began shooting in their direction, Chicago police said. Shortly before 8:30 p.m., a group pulled out firearms in the 4200 block of South Wells Street and opened fire at another group. Officers responding to ShotSpotter technology came to the scene where they found multiple people lying on the ground wounded and a male armed with a handgun, police said.Police said the gunman then opened fire toward officers and the officers returned fire.
The shooting was being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. All officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
