'Representation matters,” says personal finance Bola Sokunbi. “If you can’t see it, then it’s hard to aspire to become it, right?” This is why Sokunbi wrote a money advice book for women just like her:

Bola Sokunbi, the money expert behind the online financial support service Clever Girl Finance and author of a new finance book bearing the same name, made headlines last year for being the woman who saved $100,000 in her first three years out of college on a $54,000 salary.

This lack of knowledge can also lead to women feeling embarrassed or ashamed to seek financial advice. “These women never found a comfortable space to have [a conversation] without being made to feel stupid because they don’t know what a budget is or they’ve never budgeted successfully before.” Her goal with Clever Girl Finance is to change that.Sokunbi, who was born in Austria but spent a chunk of her youth in Nigeria, knew little to nothing about money growing up.

With these saving tactics, and being able to stay with her mom in New Jersey or her brother in New York , Sokunbi started saving 40 to 50% of each paycheck. When she did finally end up leaving home for her own place, she maintained a low mortgage, small utility bill, small phone bill and small car note—and was buying few groceries on her “ramen noodle and coke diet.”
