Several Hill Country counties have seen an upswing in confirmed cases of the rabies virus this year.
City officials in Boerne are cautioning residents after a dead fox recently tested positive for rabies. Authorities found the animal near the Cibolo Crossing area after a fox was observed behaving unusually, according to a city release. Boerne Animal Care Services supervisor Stafanie Fisher said residents should remain careful around local wildlife and take steps to protect themselves and their pets.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects mammals. It can be transmitted to humans from an animal bite and can be fatal. Confirmed cases have been on the upswing in the Hill Country this year.
