The last-ever Boeing 747 rolls off the factory floor, ending a run of over 50 years for the jumbo jet credited with popularizing air travel.
Boeing Co. had the last of its “Queen of the Skies” 747 jet roll off the factory floor on Tuesday, ending a run of more than 50 years for the jumbo jet credited with popularizing air travel.
Boeing BA began the 747 production in 1967, and the first 747-100 completed is first test flight in 1969. More than 100 companies have purchased 1,574 aircraft, logging more than 118 million flight hours, it said. This March 5, 1969, photo shows the first Boeing 747 to roll off the production line with Pan Am markings, dwarfing a Pan Am Boeing 707 in the foreground.
The plane had several “firsts,” but Boeing called the 747’s “greatest” the invention of twin aisle, widebody design. That allowed more people to fly greater distances without as many stops as in the past.
