The agreement for the Los Angeles-based Angel City Football Club is the highest valuation ever for a professional women’s team, a sign of the growing popularity of female sports.
Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, attend a conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, on July 11. The owners of Angel City Football Club have agreed to sell the team in a deal that would make it the most valuable women’s sports franchise in the world.
Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney Co., and his wife, Willow Bay, the dean of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, agreed to acquire the Los Angeles-based team in a transaction that values the club at $250 million, according to a statementby the club Tuesday. It did not disclose how much Bay and Iger were putting toward the purchase, but it did say they will become the team’s controlling owners.
“ACFC and these incredible athletes have already had a tremendous impact on the NWSL, women’s soccer, and the Los Angeles community,” Bay said in a statement. “With this investment of resources and capital, we hope to accelerate the growth of the Club and the NWSL.” The club, also which had the highest attendance and most sponsorship revenue in the NWSL last year, was founded by actress Natalie Portman, venture capitalist Kara Nortman and entrepreneur Julie Uhrman. The founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, was the team’s original controlling owner and will continue to serve on the team’s board of directors.
