In a totally unrelated exercise, BMW demonstrated how the real and virtual worlds can coexist when it turned a bunch of scribes loose in a hopped-up M2 on a runway just outside Munich. It was very different. After strapping on the racing seatbelts, I was asked to put on the virtual reality headset. Once fitted properly, I can see my hands, the steering wheel, and the road ahead.
Where things got really freaky was the moment I hit the start line. Here, the headset changed from a real-world view, albeit through stereo cameras, to something right out of. Ahead lies an animated track with coins to be collected while avoiding pop-up barriers — points for the coins, demerits for whacking a barrier.
At first it felt unreal, but the experience soon became so immersive, I forgot I was in a real car and doing real driving. The initial thought was one of apprehension, but then the drive left me smiling broadly — it is, was, and will remain the best driving simulator ever! To be honest, I am not sure what it’s designed to prove, but it was a very cool experience.
