Blade Runner's Voight-Kampff is used to test the subject's level of empathy, which translates to whether they're a Replicant--except, that's a lie.
The cornerstone of the entire Blade Runner series is the Voight-Kampff test as it confirms whether someone is a Replicant. However, after the origin of the series was revealed, fans now know that this critical test is basically just one giant placebo, making it canonically fake.
The Voight-Kampff test was first introduced in 1982’s Blade Runner, and was actually one of the catalysts for the events that transpired in the film. A Replicant was undergoing the Voight-Kampff test for the same reason everyone does: to see if they’re a Replicant. However, before the test is done, the artificial human freaks out, kills the person conducting the test, and runs away.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Voight-Kampff is Designed to Stress Out Replicants, Not Test Their Empathy In Blade Runner: Origins by K. Perkins, Mellow Brown, and Fernando Dagnino, readers witness how the Blade Runner Unit was started, as well as an introduction to the man who founded it: Cal Moreaux. Cal was a member of the LAPD who was tasked with quietly hunting a Replicant that escaped from Tyrell Corp.
During Cal’s last conversation with another Replicant ally, Asa, the two discussed the Voight-Kampff tests as they were being brought into Cal’s unit before being dispersed across the precincts. Asa asks Cal how they work, noting that their function is officially to run a diagnostic on the subject’s empathy levels on a nearly subconscious level, and that is what determines if they are a Replicant.
Just like in the first scene of the original Blade Runner film, the Voight-Kampff freaks out a Replicant subject enough to the point where they eventually expose themselves. There is no deeper level of testing empathy or personal identity, it’s just a placebo. Therefore, Blade Runner’s Voight-Kampff test is basically fake despite the fact that it tends to work fairly well in smoking out Replicants, and the origin of the series proves it.
