Over seven weeks, students will earn certifications in forklift operation, flagging, OSHA 10 and PPE.

) - Bishop State and Waterfront Rescue Mission have partnered for several years to enroll men from the mission into workforce development courses, giving them skills and credentials to rebuild their lives.“As we get younger people in, we try to figure out what we can do to help them and that’s one of the things we can do to help is get them certified in different areas,” said Clayton Robertson, chaplain at Waterfront Rescue Mission. The class started Monday. Over seven weeks, students will earn certifications in forklift operation, flagging and OSHA 10. This week, they are focused on safety requirements and personal protective equipment before moving into hands-on equipment training. The class meets Monday through Wednesday for four hours a day. “Once they’ve gotten all of the safety training down then we’ll go straight into the hands on, learning how to drive the equipment,” said LJ Turner, workforce development technical trainer. “When they finish the program, they will receive four recognized industry credentials that will help them gain employment.”

Shemar Luckie has been at Waterfront for two months. When he heard about this program and the other courses Bishop State offers through its workforce division, he signed up right away. “Especially with a lot more of the opportunities they offer with the skid steer, pre real estate and the other programs I heard about,” Luckie said. While students are in class, they still continue their programs at the mission. The goal is to make sure they are ready in every way once it’s time to transition back into everyday life. “I’m hoping to get some more certifications under my belt for pre real estate,” Luckie said. “This opens up a lot of new doors for better jobs and better opportunities for me.”“Typically, when you try to get back in the workforce you have to have some kind of certification doing something you can’t just go and get a great job without having some kind of background, so we try to make sure we get them in the right place,” he said.
