Political analysts say the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade has the potential to turn the tide for Democrats in November — or to at least blunt some of the blow in“Basically Democrats needed an issue in 2022 and they needed a lightning bolt,” University of Houston political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus said. “This ruling gave them both.”
“I think Abbott realizes that they’ve overshot it,” said Mark P. Jones, a Rice University political scientist who has also conducted polling on abortion law in Texas. “They now have gone into a territory where a majority of Texans do not share their opinion that a ban on on all abortions [is necessary] except if the mother’s health is at risk.”
