Did you know that a full century ago there was discussion of under grounding transit on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley? I didn’t either, but the evidence is right there in the Oct. 2, 1924 Berkeley Daily Gazette.

At that time there were interurban trains and a number of streetcar lines on Shattuck. The multiple rails ran along the middle of Shattuck and Adeline, and there was motor vehicle traffic on either side of them, in both directions. This didn’t come to pass in the early 20th century, but half a century later the BART line would be constructed underground through Downtown , creating something akin to what was proposed in 1924.Further south from Downtown, where Adeline and Shattuck intersected, there was continuing struggle over the location of the Southern Pacific Railroad freight yards. They occupied a several block-long, wedge-shaped piece of land where Berkeley Bowl and a Walgreens stand today.

On Oct. 2, 1924, The Berkeley Realty Board took a position opposing the removal of the freight yards. They also supported a proposal “to make all territory west of San Pablo Avenue an industrial zone.” Since then, as now, west Berkeley was a mix of homes, businesses and industrial facilities, this would stir up its own controversy for years to come.Memorial Stadium was in its first full season of football play in fall of 1924.
