Rutgers has been a roll this weekend, but landed its first in-state prospect on Sunday.
A 6-foot-5, 295-pounder who plays inside, Vigna is big, mean, and well-coached coming out of New Jersey’s premier high school football program in Oradell., Kaj Sanders became the first blue-chip from Big North to sign to Rutgers since Greg Schiano’s return, signaling others to follow.
Despite his national top 150 ranking, his 10.8-second 100-meter speed, or All-American track and field status, Sanders brings his lunch pail to work each day, doesn’t complain and sets the team’s example for toughness – tools that should help him succeed as a true freshman at Rutgers. Tools which Sanders and Vigna both share.
Despite the allure of tall, athletic offensive tackles, teams that run the ball know the importance of road graders who create space in the run game and make it near-impossible for teams to rush their QBs from the inside. Despite being just 16 years old, Vigna is bigger and more highly-sought but comparable to Bryan Felter, who ascended from Oradell and the Crusader culture in 2020.
Twenty-one high school seniors — and potential Scarlet Knights — learned the ins and outs of Rutgers’ facilities, academic programs and schematic football plans this weekend while judging whether Rutgers is the program for them. Seven of the 21 players are rated four-stars.
