Miles below the city of Rochester lies a 30 mile long sewer system known as CSOAP , and it's keeping our waters clean and safe. June 25, 2024. Rochester , N.Y. - About 100 feet below the streets of Rochester lies a complex system that handles the county's sewage.
According to the county's Department of Environmental Services, without this system Rochester would have about 90 overflow events each year, sending combined sewage into the Genesee River and Irondequoit Bay. “This is what’s keeping our waterways clean, what’s keeping us healthy up by the lake and it’s an amazing complex series of things down here," said County Executive Adam Bello.
