Lingering behind officials' words in the aftermath of Uvalde is another fact: many receive donations from the NRA and other gun rights groups. Here's what 25 Texas politicians said about Uvalde, and how much they took from gun lobby groups.

The frequency of mass shootings in the United States has led to a grim routine: officials have scripts they rely on to express empathy and grief. Many mention their own family members. They express horror and sadness. They mention the existence of evil. They invoke God. And, so often, they say that their thoughts and prayers are with the people of whatever community is now reeling from the impact of an armed civilian spraying bullets into unsuspecting people going about their lives.

Lingering behind those politicians’ words is a simple fact: Many of them receive donations from the NRA and other gun rights groups. And they go on to vote against assault weapon bans, background checks, waiting periods, age limits, ammunition restrictions and the like that many believe would curtail the epidemic of gun violence in America.

Here are the words 25 politicians issued in response to the Uvalde massacre of 19 children and two adults juxtaposed with the dollars they took from gun lobby groups."My heart goes out to those in the hospital receiving care and to the loved ones of those who lost their lives. As a parent, I cannot image the pain they must be feeling. I am in touch with local officials in Uvalde and plan to travel there as soon as I can get there.

We’ve seen too many of these shootings. No parent should have to bear the pain of burying their child. We need to come together, as one nation, and support Uvalde as they try to heal from this devastating loss.""As a father and grandfather, Erika and I are devastated to hear of the shooting in Uvalde today. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and the first responders. We are lifting up Uvalde in prayer.
