Batman #148 – written by Chip Zdarsky, with art by Jorge Jimenez – featured the shocking climax to the Caped Crusader's battle with Zur-En-Arrh. While Zur still has an entire army of robots and a nearly indestructible body due to the Failsafe Android, Batman comes up with the only plan capable of defeating Zur.

Red Hood is likely the Robin who has had the most experience with death, as his character is almost entirely defined by the death he suffered at the hands of the Joker. Batman's plan to defeat Zur-En-Arrh required someone to die. While Batman originally planned to sacrifice himself, Red Hood knew the world needed Batman a lot more than it needed him, and volunteered to die in his place.
