Can you imagine a Kelly Clarkson concert in downtown Portage? Or Blake Shelton? Or Gwen Stefani? On the Roxx owner Robin Bender can.
Bender has made the rounds at city meetings — Board of Works , City Council and Redevelopment Commission — trying to get permission to hold a big outdoor music festival so she can try to book one of those big performers. The concert would cost $100 a ticket. “You could easily walk out of there spending $200 per person” including alcohol and branded apparel sold by the performer’s crew, said Councilman Scott Williams, D-3rd. He also serves on the Board of Works.
“You can make it contingent or whatever on getting everything in writing.” Arranging a concert with talent that hot takes months and sometimes years of planning, Williams said. “I’m excited about the idea of having it, but what will security look like, and who’s paying for it?” asked Police Chief Michael Candiano the day before a planned meeting with Bender.
