There are practical and sound academic reasons behind a cellphone ban.
The answer to why schools should ban smartphones is straightforward. Why not? Who needs to be on-call at all times? Ensuring that academic achievement is the centerpiece of every classroom in America is simply imperative, writes Arnold Holtberg.A growing body of academic research shows that personal smartphones in the hands of students distract from class lessons and learning.
From coast to coast, school districts have prohibited or greatly restricted phone use to restore focus in the classroom. In a bold speaking of truth to power, Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath recently called for the Texas Legislature to make a statewide ban of cellphones in the classroom part of the education code., Morath called the use of cellular devices “extremely harmful” to student progress.
But our concerns also are grounded in what we know about teenage brains, their struggles to concentrate while multitasking and possibly long-term effects on health. Studies show that up to 95% of young people ages 13-17 use a social media platform and more than a third use social media “almost constantly.” The temptation to access their own devices forces teachers to ignore the rule or enforce disciplinary actions.A little bit of old school goes a long way as well.
