San Diego State falls behind early but roars back behind good games from Darrion Trammell, Matt Bradley and Jaedon LeDee
The scoreboard said No. 19 San Diego State lost against No. 8 UCLA in their closed-door basketball scrimmage Sunday at Viejas Arena.“Everything you want to have happen, did,” Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said. “We got shown some things we need to work on, we saw some things we thought we’d be good at and we were, everyone got to play, and no one got hurt. That’s the perfect scrimmage.”They learned they can hang with the No.
The scrimmage was closed to fans, boosters and media, and good luck getting a copy of the film, but several people who saw it described a tough, physical battle between big, strong, long, athletic teams.Dutcher opened with Seattle transfer Darrion Trammell and his four returning starters: Lamont Butler, Matt Bradley, Keshad Johnson and Nathan Mensah. TCU transfer Jaedon LeDee played starter’s minutes off the bench and responded with a double-double .
The Aztecs figured they’d be excellent on the glass and hoped to be better in transition. They were both, grabbing 20 offensive boards and finishing with 27 fast-break points. The 87 points were 21 above their average last season and seven more than in any single game. The bad: Mick Cronin’s Bruins shot 50.8 percent overall and 45.8 percent behind the 3-point arc. Most of the damage was done by Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jaquez Jr., who combined for 57 points and 10 3s.
