The line lost some depth before camp opened when the other junior, Kyle Trombley, suffered a foot injury that required surgery and is expected to sideline him until midseason. Trombley was competing to start at left guard with sophomore Cade Bennett, a transfer from Oklahoma State. “Let’s see what happens,” said Goff, whose 12-year NFL career included five seasons with the Chargers. “Hopefully, we’ll have a good, clear-cut picture of what’s going to be there.”“A lot of them haven’t played in front of that many people,” he said. “They’ve got to understand that when the lights are on, it’s like Kevin Costner in ‘For Love of the Game,’ where he just clears everybody out. It’s just him and the catcher.
“I was getting put on my butt just from holding bags,” Uluave said. “I learned the difference there. I didn’t want to get put on my butt. Got stronger. Got faster. Half of the O-line group is comprised of either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen, led by Simmons and Ulugalu-Maseuli and Zavier Leonard, another player on the cusp of making an impact.Simmons, a standout at nearby Helix High, struggled in practice last season and was regularly challenged by coaches.
