Avalanche Gabriel Landeskog plans to undergo a cartilage transplant in his right knee Wednesday and is expected to miss the 2023-24 regular season, the team announced Tuesday morning.
It will be Landeskog’s fourth surgery dating back to 2020 as he attempts to recover from a patellar cartilage injury that already forced him to miss the entire 2022-23 season, including the playoffs. After the upcoming season, he will have missed 187 consecutive regular-season games. Landeskog and the Avalanche didn’t reach a decision about his fate for the remainder of 2022-23 until after the March 2 trade deadline., Landeskog said he was seeking medical opinions and that surgery was an option. “I think it’s a big decision, so it needs a lot of doing as much homework as I can on different options,” he said at the time. “But we haven’t gotten to the point yet where I know exactly what that would mean.
Landeskog knew then that the chronic injury “very well could linger into next year,” but he was confident it wouldn’t be career-ending. On Sept. 2, 2020, Landeskog’s right knee was cut by teammate Cale Makar’s skate during Game 6 of a playoff series against the Dallas Stars. Landeskog missed Game 7 and underwent a minor procedure. His knee started “bugging me on a daily basis” early in the 2021-22 season, which culminated in another surgery that was performed March 14, 2022. Landeskog missed the final 23 games of the regular season then returned for the start of the playoffs.
