South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai, in partnership with a US AI firm, will develop a reconnaissance unmanned surface vessel by 2026.
South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has partnered with Palantir, a US-based AI firm, to develop an unmanned surface vessel for the navy’s reconnaissance missions.
On April 14, HD Hyundai signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Palantir in Washington, D.C. “The unmanned ship market is a new blue ocean dominated by cutting-edge technology,” said Wonho Joo, CEO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. “We will pioneer this field based on the achievements and trust that both companies have built up so far.”DARPA’s Defiant: Uncrewed demo ship to hit the seas in 2024
“We have also participated in the integrated combat system modernization project of Lockheed Martin, the world’s No. 1 defense company, and the American Navy,” said Automated navy ships are gaining attention as an essential force that replaces existing manned ships and performs various missions such as surveillance and reconnaissance in dangerous areas, mine search/removal, and combat. It has recently been deployed in combat and has been active as an asymmetric force.
