Kilgore, 61, was Virginia’s attorney general from 2002 to 2005. He was the state’s secretary of public safety from 1994 to 1998. Before that he was a federal and state prosecutor.Advertisement
“This was not really an easy decision for me,” Kilgore said Thursday, a day after Virginia’s parole board voted 3-0 to parole his client, Smith, after 28 years into his 44-year-sentence. “Because you look at the charge that’s on the record, and what Mr. Smith’s imprisoned for, you almost immediately want to just back away.”
“I wouldn’t go out on the limb like this for just anybody, but Mr. Smith is just a good guy who has had a lot of time to think about all this and has his life in order now. And he did that while in prison when it would be so much easier just to get involved in prison life and not try to better yourself.”
