“I’m not some dinosaur who can’t adapt,” he said.
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - APRIL 16: Justin Verlander #35 of the Houston Astros throws a pitch during the first inning against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on April 16, 2022 in Seattle, Washington. SEATTLE — The Astros are embracing Major League Baseball’s new sign-protecting technology, introduced in part after their own misdeeds during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.. Odorizzi yielded four earned runs across 4 ⅓ innings.
Both Verlander and Odorizzi threw to catcher Martín Maldonado, who wore a nine-button keypad on his shin guard. Maldonado sent signs to the pitcher by pressing the buttons. Odorizzi and Verlander had receivers in their hats, which told them the pitch and location Maldonado called. “It just takes away one less thing of being able to pick up signs,” Odorizzi said. “If it’s trying to relay from second base, it’s on me as the pitcher to disguise looks, glove, whatever it might be. We both know what we’re throwing, so the catcher can set up late. It just eliminates the spectrum of what guys may be looking at from second base and trying to relay.”
