The righthander will report to Class AAA Sugar Land and afford the Astros a veteran depth...

he won’t make their opening day roster, but manager Dusty Baker seemed encouraged by the impression Buttrey left.

Buttrey yielded 11 hits, walked eight batters and surrendered and five earned runs across nine Grapefruit League innings. Four of the runs arrived during his first three outings. The 29-year-old righthander went unscored upon in four of his final five outings. “His last three outings were really good,” Baker said. “He’s coming around nicely, got a good attitude. At first he looked a little apprehensive on things, but the last three, he’s been throwing lights out. I just know he has a good chance to help us some time this year.”

Buttrey does not have an opt-out in his contract until midseason, a person familiar with the deal said. The righthander will report to Class AAA Sugar Land and afford the Astros a veteran depth presence. Buttrey retired from the sport in 2020 at age 28. He returned to the game last year and signed a minor league deal with the Astros in January. Former Astros bullpen coach Doug White, who is now Buttrey’s de facto agent, played a pivotal role in the deal, which he negotiated.
