Astros manager Dusty Baker would like to see more time added to baseball's pitch clock
In aWednesday, the Astros' Jose Abreu struck out on a full count when he wasn't set in the batter's box in time. Later in the game, reliever Hector Neris was called for ball four when he didn't deliver a full-count pitch to Daulton Varsho before the pitch clock expired. That leadoff walk in the seventh inning led to the Blue Jays scoring the go-ahead run.
Major league rules instituted this season require hitters to be"alert to the pitcher" before the eight-second mark on the clock, which runs for 15 seconds with nobody on base and 20 seconds with runners on. Pitchers must begin their pitching motion before the clock expires. Baker said he'd like the clock to be set at 20 seconds even with the bases empty, like they were on Neris' costly violation.Baker also thinks the pitch clock is leading to pitchers getting fatigued quicker since they don't have as much time to catch their breath between pitches. Perhaps more importantly, the more hurried pace is leading to more mistakes by pitchers.
